I’m a UKCP and HCPC registered Integrative Art Psychotherapist. I work with adults both face-to-face and online. My style is empathetic and warm, with an awareness of how identity and social context impact experience.
Sessions usually have a mixture of talking and art making. This combines the usual practices of talking therapy – a safe, confidential space to discuss what may be troubling you – with the possibility of using creativity to give further insight. Sometimes people like to paint, draw, use collage, clay, writing, poetry or photography – entirely up to you.
By working with images, it is possible to explore emotional issues in a different way, one that words alone may not allow. You do not need to be an artist or have had any art experience to benefit from this. Just drawn to the idea of expressing yourself creatively.
I have experience working with clients this way to explore a range of issues: life changes, self-esteem, stress, depression, anxiety, shame, relational problems, loss, neurodiversity, trauma, sexual assault, unstable mood, LGBTQ+ issues.
Approach
I work in an integrative way, using ideas from different therapeutic frameworks depending on individual need and interest.
This includes:
- Psychodynamic Psychotherapy – how our past, unconscious processes and repeating relational patterns impact us.
- Humanistic (Person-Centred and Gestalt influenced) Psychotherapy – our experience and self-actualisation in the ‘here-and-now’.
- I believe questions of purpose, freedom, meaning, and how we manage life-stages are also important, and I am happy to explore clients’ existential and spiritual needs.
- The social model of disability, intersectionality and reflective anti-oppressive practice around issues of difference inform my work.
Experience
I currently work in private practice, seeing a small number of clients, and in a community-based women’s counselling service. Previously I have worked as an honorary arts psychotherapist in the NHS, where I had three years of experience in inpatient and outpatient services, seeing individuals and groups. I also have experience in a working as an honorary counsellor for MIND.
